The End of the Beginning

April 11, 2013

Well, this is the end of the beginning.  The end of Health Kwest, but the beginning of this weight loss, healthy me, new life, more knowledgeable self, lifestyle change.  Above are a few photos from before that show the tired, lazy, heavy, worn out, double chinned me, and the after (or middle really) picture of the last Day of the competition me.  70 pounds lighter and an amazing transformation of how I feel.  I’m starting to feel like the athlete again.  I’ve completed my first 5K, and I have 5 more on the books, as well as a few 10K’s, and a half marathon in November.  The biggest encouragement in the process has been being able to see the changes, as well as, others seeing the changes.  Friends and family have been a huge encouragement in the process.  From my 2 1/2 year old saying “Go Daddy”, to some of our 90 year old senior adults in our church telling me how good I look and that I have inspired them to get healthy.  (I’m thinking you’re 90 years old, my goodness, you’re pretty healthy).  My students that I work with pooled their own money together and got me and my family a 1 year YMCA membership and a gift card to Academy Sports.  I have had so much encouragement from friends on social media, and have had the opportunity to tell several people how I’ve been able to lose the weight.  As I have exercised and have watched the sweat soak through to many shirts to count, I see the “before” me.  I see the guy who would sit on the couch and down a whole pizza with cheese sticks while drinking a two liter Mountain Dew.  I have done more exercise in the last 60 days than I did all of last year, I am certain.  I have a great group of friends that keep me accountable and exercise with me.  I have learned that I can stay on an elliptical for hours and never get tired of it.  I have also learned that the more friends that can keep you accountable to something, the harder you work.  I am headed the right direction with all of the exercise.     The new me with food deals with monitoring and journaling to see what I am putting into my body.  Just as I have tracked my mileage, I am tracking what I eat.  Throughout this contest, I have eaten oatmeal and peanut butter for breakfast, an great Genghis Grill lunch, and then eaten vegetable soup or a smoothie for dinner.  Will I eat pizza after the competition is over?  Sure.  Will it be the whole pizza, and cheese sticks, and a 2 liter of Mountain Dew.  Not so much.  I have learned that calories and carbs are these things that have meaning in our lives.  Eating sensibly is going to be a huge part of keeping a healthy lifestyle.  I saw the quote the other day, “Eat to live, Don’t live to eat”.  Before Health Kwest, I lived to eat.  I would wake up in the morning feeling like P Ditty…..no that’s not right.  I would wake up in the morning, already thinking about what I was going to indulge myself on for lunch.  Aint nobody got time for that.  It was definitely no wonder I was almost at 400 pounds.  This is the end of a really good thing for me.  Health Kwest has been great.  Thanks Genghis Grill, Corporate, Chiara, Brad, Keith, James, Kiana, Tara, Annette, Skippy, and everyone else at our store.  Your encouragement has been great.  This is the end of the contest, but the beginning of the race for the ultimate goal.

Day 51……… Training on the Go

April 2, 2013

Image

This is a picture from early on in the competition that goes to show you that even at the office on a break, you can find time for some high intensity workouts.  There are so many things that we can do that are activity based that we don’t do because we get lazy, not because we don’t have the time.  I am the first to say that this describes me.  I am not going to be in this competition looking down on people who aren’t doing what I’m doing to be healthy now, because 51 days ago, I was right there being unhealthy.  I am changing these things in my life and have a few exercises that you can do in a work environment, or on a break, or with just a few minutes here or there.  One is jumping jacks.  I started doing the Jillian Michaels Shred video at home, and was really surprised that one of her core exercises is jumping jacks.  May I just say that jumping jacks get my heart rate going in a hurry.  I guess I think about them as a kids activity, but they kick my tail.  Another variation that she uses is “jumping rope”, but without the rope.  You stand like you would be jumping rope and you jump still moving your arms like you have a jumprope in your hands.  You might look silly, but this also gets the heart rate up there.  Push ups, whether you can do 10 at a time or 50 at a time, or only 5 the cheating way, spread out over your day, doing this will give you a good workout.  You can do like my above picture shows and do stairs.  It’s amazing to me the line of people you see waiting for elevators and escalators.  Again, until 51 days ago, I was guilty.  Take the stairs, then take them again.  Do 10-12 flights of stairs, and you have yourself a nice workout going.  Lunges and squats, even with no weights are a great exercise, again, something you can do in a work environment, or with little time to spare.  At the end of the day, it’s not so much that we don’t have the time.  It’s that we truly aren’t motivated to make the changes we need to make, happen.  I have had more energy these last 51 days.  I’ve played with the kids more. I’ve felt better physically and emotionally, and who doesn’t love to get all the complements.  The key will be to stay motivated after day 60.  It is always a good idea to surround yourself with great accountability, and I feel that I have done that.  When this contest ends, I plan to lose another 90 pounds over the next year.  It’s exciting to see numbers on the scale that I haven’t seen in 6 years.  Thanks Genghis Grill for encouraging me, and many others to get into a healthy lifestyle.  Check out their website http://fcrps.me/2lh.2z3Q.  I highly recommend making Genghis Grill a part of your weight loss plans.  They have done wonders for me.  Can’t wait to push it through the end.

Day 45…..my “little black dress”

March 27, 2013

Image

Today is day 45 and our social media task was to post a picture of our “little black dress”, or something that we want to fit back into.  This is my football jersey from high school.  I would love to be able to fit back into it.  At the end of the weight loss goals, I will be the same weight that I was my senior year, so, the jersey WILL fit.  I’ve been able to see huge progress so far and others have noticed too, which is nice.  I cant believe there are only a few weeks left.  This has been awesome.  #genghisgrill #healthkwest

Day 33 Someone who inspires

March 15, 2013

This is my friend David Givens.  David and I have worked together for 3 1/2 years.  David has always, since I’ve known him, been on top of his game regarding his health.  He told me a few months ago that he used to be a “big boy”.  You would never know it by looking at him, but he showed me some pictures.  David lost 42 pounds several years ago, and, more importantly, has kept it off for 8 years.  David told me some important things about his journey, and he has always given me lots of encouragement in my own journey, dating back to way before the competition even started (We are now at day 33 and I feel great).  As I talked to David, he told me that he knew it was time to do something with his weight and health, in his life, when he was on the verge of buying new pants, plus, he knew what his BMI SHOULD be.  All total, he has lost 23% of his total weight.  He competes with himself and with others to keep his weight in check.  He does competitive runs all over and is always trying to improve his times.  He gave me advice for this competition, as well as, things to do when it is over.  He has given me exercise tips, like doing intervals, and food tips, such as making sure I am balancing out my carbs throughout the day.  It is nice to have good friends that you can count on who have been were you are.  David encourages me to eat healthy and has worked out with me and challenged me on many occasions.  He has told me how to keep focusing on the prize and pushing myself, and he told me how he continues to keep himself challenged and motivated.  He and I are both really competitive, so that works for us….Finish Strong

Day 30….Something New

March 12, 2013

Just went in today to Genghis Grill and was able to eat something new to me and a limited time only special.  I tried the pulled pork, which is one of my wife’s favorites, and was blown away.  Hopefully it wont stay on the limited time only menu, but will be here to stay.  My wife said that it was great, and I agree 100%.  There are several BBQ places in town, and Genghis Grill’s pulled pork is better to me than they are.  Also, even without seasoning, the pulled pork has amazing flavor to it.  I will definitely be having it again.

Day 24……Benefits of Tea

March 6, 2013

Red diamond tea gave us tea as we began this Health Kwest.  They know that tea has health benefits.  You can get to their website by going to www.reddiamond.com.  Some of the concrete evidence that tea is healthy is that Drinking tea is linked with a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease.  Green tea is full of antioxidants.  One study showed that a daily cup of green tea lowered cardiovascular disease risks by 10%.  Oolong tea is shown to have a positive effect with people trying to lose weight.  The president of the Tea Association of the USA says that White tea benefits those with diabetes.  A study in the Journal of Nutrition found that drinking three cups of hibiscus tea daily could help lower blood pressure in people with hypertension.  Those are the things that studies have shown.  Other studies have shown that tea could reduce the risks of heart attacks, lots of cancers, and some neurological diseases.  The article went on to say that tea is good at hydrating the body (even despite the caffeine).  We, in the south, love us some tea.  Thanks, Red Diamond.  #reddiamond #healthkwest #genghisgrill
